Influence can be defined as the power exerted over the minds and behavior of others. A power that can affect, persuade and cause changes to someone or something. In order to influence people, you first need to discover what is already influencing them. What makes them tick? What do they care about? We need some leverage to work with when we’re trying to change how people think and behave.

I agree that the decline in attention spans has accelerated, but I wouldn't attribute that to USA Today. I think TV started the ball rolling in the 60s and 70s with sound-byte/infographic-style news and short-form news programs. Interestingly, when USA Today was launched in the 1980s, its newsboxes were deliberately designed to look like TVs -- I assume to appeal to people who usually got their news from TV.

This post was very helpful for me to look at the big picture. I often get lost in the small details and forget about the long-term plan. Thanks for the info!
